Victorian Cornice
Order a Victorian Cornice in Melbourne from F. Vitale & Sons
Queen Victoria reigned for 63 years from 1837 to 1901. This was the height of the industrial revolution. During this time architecture developed from simple Victorian workers cottages through more spacious homes to highly decorated mansions.
The early homes were decorated quite simply. The homes built in the middle period tended to have quite highly decorated formal rooms at the front of the house fading to simple or even austere utility rooms. In the later more prosperous period the decoration became more prolific and intricate; some examples exhibiting extremely detailed designs.
This can range from small gutter cornices through large gutters to Italianate masterpieces which are very popular when one wants to create a room with real "presence".
A Gutter Cornices is the archetypal Victorian cornice. They have an elegant simplicity and distinctive shape that immediately marks a house as Victorian.
Although these cornices are usually used in the restoration of Victorian homes an increasing number of home owners are using the smaller sizes in lower ceiling modern houses. Their restrained style adds class where ever they are used.
The larger sizes give a sense of presence and grandeur to the spacious high ceilinged formal rooms of the era.
CN26
Ceiling: | 80.00 mm |
---|---|
Wall: | 100.00 mm |
Length: | 3.90 m |
Another variation on the bell & bows theme, CN26 was designed after the Victorian era but includes element of a classical Victorian cornice.
It has been used extensively in homes built since World War 2 but would not be out of place in a Victorian extension.
CN422
Ceiling: | 40.00 mm |
---|---|
Wall: | 32.00 mm |
Length: | 3.60 m |
Cornice CN422 is our smallest Victorian gutter cornice.
It is usually used on ceilings lower than 2.4 metres but is sometimes useful on higher ceilings where space is restricted or in bathrooms or walk in robes where a large cornice is not required but a period cornice is wanted to tie in with a period theme.
Because of its small size it is particularly fragile and is only made to order.
CN47
Ceiling: | 330.00 mm |
---|---|
Wall: | 241.00 mm |
Length: | 3.60 m |
Cornice CN47 is our largest Victorian gutter cornice. It looks magnificent on 3.6 metre ceilings or higher.
This is the cornice that put grandeur and elegance into Victorian formal rooms. The dining room, the drawing room and the formal lounge used this cornice to give status to the Masters home.
The gutter on this cornice if very deep and pronounced and requires some special installation, see instructions here.
CN54
Ceiling: | 145.00 mm |
---|---|
Wall: | 145.00 mm |
Length: | 4.80 m |
This cornice is a great all rounder; it sits in the middle of our Victorian gutter range. It can be used on ceilings as low as 2.7 metres where impact is required or at 3.3 or even 3.6 metres when a restrained look is needed or there are space limitations.
It is particularly useful in narrow hall ways where a wider cornice makes is difficult to use the ceiling rose you would like.
CN65
Ceiling: | 170.00 mm |
---|---|
Wall: | 170.00 mm |
Length: | 4.20 m |
The Victorians loved their gardens. The plaster ornaments of this era were often stylised representations of natural garden features. This cornice is a more literal translation of the garden into the inside of the house.
The sparsely spaced leaves make a stylish and elegant feature.
CN85
Ceiling: | 170.00 mm |
---|---|
Wall: | 150.00 mm |
Length: | 4.80 m |
Another recent addition to our cornice range. CN85 sits between CN54 and CN4042. It is usually used at ceiling heights of about 3 metres. The projection of CN54 is 150mm on both the wall and ceiling while CN85 has 170mm on the ceiling, in larger rooms this additional width usually creates a more pleasing effect.
CN86
Ceiling: | 288.00 mm |
---|---|
Wall: | 164.00 mm |
Length: | 4.20 m |
Cornice CN86 is new to our range. It fills the gap between CN47 and CN4042. It can be used at 3.0 metre ceieling heights where a bold cornice is require and is suitalbe upto 3.6 metres when you want a more restrained cornice than CN47. At 3 metres it makes a real statement.
This cornice is a classic Victorian gutter that will enhance any period home built during the 1800s. It is often used in kitchen family room extensions to soften large ceiling areas.
