Plaster vents are no longer required by building regulations but they still provide beauty and interest to walls.
It is not necessary to have an opening behind them if they are just used for ornamentation. This then complies with 5 star energy rating.
Victorian and Edwardian homes used elaborate vent designs to provide points of interest on plain walls. Post war plain vents were used, these can be replaced with decorative models by installing the new vent directily over the old plain one.
