Victorian Cornice

Victorian Cornice
The Victorian era produced many types of cornice besides the "Gutter" cornices. Many borrowed features from previous periods, which leads to some blurring of styles
The Classical and Georgian periods were freely "borrowed" from for cornice designs but many original designs were also created. During the latter part of the Victorian era, considerable effort was put in to creating "impressive" plaster decorations. Cornices got larger and more intricate in the wealthier homes, but even more modest dwellings strove to emulate the mansions on a less expensive scale. This was the era of the formal living room, formal dining room, the drawing room and of course the entrance hall. These rooms were show pieces, while the rest of the house could be quite plain.
These days the family room has been introduced as the centre of the home and justly deserves the same treatment as the formal rooms of old.
Extensions to the rear of Victorian houses can be of modern design, but it is possible to tie it to the rest of the house with period plaster pieces.
